What exactly is a Hate Bias Incident?

The term ‘Hate Bias Incident’ relates to behavior or language which displays an act of bias against people based on their identification qualities such as race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and many more. Regardless of what category it belongs to, a hate bias incident is an act which violates the code of student conduct. Hate bias related incidents lead to a more serious set of consequences.

Some examples of Hate Bias Incidents are defacement of signs or posters, intimidation messages or comments, vandalism of university of personal property, or any other similar category of acts. If there’s an evidence that supports that fact the victim is being targeted by perpetrator because of their identification aspects, the perpetrator will be dealt with consequences.

While there’s a misconception among some people that you must avoid expressing your point of view or ideas about a particular group of people in order to stay away from being charged with a Hate Bias incident. But in reality, as long as your ideas or point of view isn’t offensive and defaming, that simply comes under your freedom of expression. The value of openness, expression, and free speech protects the ideas, but it doesn’t protect any act of hate bias and harassment.

Hate Bias Incidents are different from Hate crime incidents, the difference being the former doesn’t involve any type of criminal activity, whereas the latter does. But the common factor between both type of incidents is, that they both are motivated by hate towards particular race, religion, ethnicity, gender, and many other similar aspects. While the Hate Bias incidents and Hate crimes are dangerous to the society and especially students, since they damage the existing harmony and peace among the people.
